Located in San Cristóbal, Najayo Mujeres is a correctional and rehabilitation center for incarcerated women—many of whom are mothers separated from their children. Despite systemic challenges, the center offers vocational training and educational programs aimed at helping women rebuild their lives.
The prison’s rehabilitation efforts focus on vocational training, emotional resilience, and family reconnection—especially for mothers navigating incarceration. These programs equip women with practical skills, tools and personal support to make different choices for their futures.
Counseling staff work with the women to help them process their trauma, build emotional resilience, and strengthen their mental health.
The women face overcrowded conditions, limited access to medicines, medical supplies, and mental health care, and a shortage of basic hygiene supplies. These challenges stem from broader resource limitations across the Dominican Republic’s public systems that impact funding to the prison.
Despite these constraints, the women show remarkable resilience, and the staff remain deeply committed to rehabilitation and care.
